Guidelines for Natural Values Assessments - (Brief for Consultants)

Cover - Guidelines for Natural Values AssessmentsIn Tasmania, reports on the impact of proposed developments on natural values may be required by a regulator as part of a planning approval process under State legislation. These guidelines have been prepared for consultants who are engaged by proponents to survey and report on the impact of proposed developments on natural values within Tasmania.

This guide provides the minimum requirements for information needed to assess the potential impact/s of proposed activities on biodiversity and geodiversity.

To enable an informed assessment to be undertaken of the conservation values being reported on, the following information is required:
  • A detailed description of the proposed activity
  • An accurate and detailed description of the site including species and communities of fauna, flora and geological/geomorphological features and processes occurring at the site
  • Accurate and legible spatial information
  • An up to date and accurate account of the significant conservation values of the site (flora, fauna, geological/geomorphological features and the site itself) given within site based, regional, state, national and if appropriate, international contexts. Criteria for determining conservation significance are given below
  • A detailed description of the likely impact of the activity on the values identified
  • Detailed recommendations on possible measures by which adverse impacts can be either avoided, remedied or mitigated. See General Offset Principles.
