The Tasmanian Government's Wealth from Water Pilot Program aims to assist farmers and potential investors to develop their irrigation businesses and help make the transition to growing the high-value crops best suited to their area. The Pilot is pioneering new ways for providing soil, climate and enterprise suitability information, as well as market and business planning support.

Wealth from Water is a two-year, $2.15 million pilot program that commenced in November 2010. Two case studies are now underway as part of the Pilot. One is the 45,000 hectare Meander Valley Irrigation Scheme. The other covers 27,000 hectares of the new Midlands Irrigation Scheme around Tunbridge, Woodbury, York Plains, Nala and Andover.

New technology is being used to classify land according to its suitability for various agricultural enterprises. Landowners and potential investors will be able to access comprehensive soil, climate, crop and enterprise information. This will be complemented by farm business planning tools, the latest market information and market opportunity workshops. The information provided aims to help reduce potential production, financial and environmental risks from irrigation development.

Ultimately the information and tools being developed by Wealth from Water should be useful for irrigation districts right across Tasmania.
