Marine Reserves and Fisheries Research Areas

Marine Nature Reserves
Fisheries Research Areas
Other Areas

In Tasmania, seven Marine Nature Reserves have been declared in State waters, including Maria Island, Tinderbox, Ninepin Point, Governor Island, Port Davey and Bathurst Harbour, the Kent Group and sub-antarctic Macquarie Island. All are protected areas and generally fishing by any method is prohibited however some marine reserves have areas where restricted recreational and commercial fishing is allowed. Fisheries Research Areas generally have restrictions on some types of fishing depending on the type of research being conducted.

Other activities which don't damage the marine reserves are generally allowed including swimming, boating, kayaking, snorkelling and SCUBA diving.
